Lego® Technic for adults: The 10 best sets

📘 Lists

Lego® marks its Technic sets for adults with an 18+ age label. In November 2026 there are 13 of them on sale: a hypercar, an excavator, an off-roader, a motorcycle, five Formula 1 cars and four other road and race cars. Most of the sets in our 2023 version of this article have since been retired, so we rebuilt the list from the current range.

Lego Technic has been around since 1977. The sets for adults differ from the ones for children mainly in their scale, their mechanical detail and their price. Every set below except the excavator has working steering, most also have suspension, half have an engine with moving pistons and several have a real gearbox.

How we chose these sets. We started with every Lego Technic set labelled 18+ that Lego sold in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and the UK on 6 November 2026. We then looked at three things: how much mechanism you get to build, how the finished model works as a display piece, and the price per piece. To keep the list varied, only two of the five F1 cars made the top 10. The others are covered in their own section. The descriptions of functions are based on Lego's own product information.

Don't pay the full price. On 6 November 2026, the Brickfact price comparison showed every set on this list between roughly 27% and 38% below its German RRP. In the UK the discounts were usually smaller, and in the US most sets were close to full price.

1. Lego® Technic 42172 McLaren P1

The McLaren P1 is the current flagship of Lego's large supercar series and our first choice. With 3,893 pieces it is the biggest Technic set for adults on sale. Its centrepiece is a 7-speed gearbox with a shift drum, connected to a V8 engine with moving pistons. On top of that you build the suspension, the adjustable rear wing and the butterfly doors.

Like the real P1, the model has its own serial number. The finished 1:8 model is a strong display piece. The RRP is €449.99. Lego still sells it, but it is the set where shopping around saves the most money.

2. Lego® Technic 42215 Volvo EC500 Hybrid Excavator

If you prefer machines to cars, the Volvo EC500 is the best choice in the current 18+ range. It is the only motorised set on this list: a motor and a gearbox drive four functions that you select with a lever, including the boom, the arm and the interchangeable hammer and shovel. The tracks, the rotating upper body and the opening cab doors work by hand.

At €399.99 it is expensive, but no other set on this list does as much once it is finished. Brickfact currently lists it as retiring soon, so it is worth deciding before stock runs out.

3. Lego® Technic 42177 Mercedes-Benz G 500 PROFESSIONAL Line

The G 500 is the off-road alternative to the supercars. Lego made it for the 45th anniversary of the G-Class. You build a 6-cylinder in-line engine, a gearbox with drive, neutral and reverse, two differential locks, working steering and the raised suspension. A ladder, a spare wheel and a roof rack complete the look.

With 2,891 pieces for €249.99 it has one of the best price-per-piece ratios of the large sets here. In the US the Lego shop listed it as sold out when we checked, and Brickfact expects it to retire soon.

4. Lego® Technic 42202 Ducati Panigale V4 S

The Ducati is the only motorcycle among Lego's current Technic sets for adults. The pedal-operated gearbox has 3 speeds plus neutral. Turning the rear wheel drives the chain, which connects to the gearbox and the V4 engine. Front and rear suspension and steering work as well, and a stand is included for display.

Brickfact lists it as retiring soon.

5. Lego® Technic 42228 McLaren MCL39 F1 Car

Lego currently sells five F1 cars at 1:8 scale. We chose the McLaren MCL39, released in 2026 and modelled on the 2025 car, as the best all-rounder. It costs €229.99 and has push-rod and pull-rod suspension, steering, a 2-speed gearbox, a differential and a V6 engine under a removable cover. The DRS on the rear wing can be activated.

6. Lego® Technic 42206 Oracle Red Bull Racing RB20

The RB20 has almost the same features as the McLaren: a 2-speed gearbox, a differential, a V6 engine with moving pistons and an adjustable rear wing. You can steer it with the steering wheel or with a knob on the roof, and it comes with printed tyres. If you prefer the Red Bull livery, it is just as good a choice as the MCL39.

7. Lego® Technic 42231 Fast and Furious Dodge Charger R/T

The Dodge Charger R/T from the Fast and Furious films is the best car on this list for movie fans. The V8 engine has a chain-driven compressor and the rear-wheel drive uses a cardan shaft with a differential. The front wheels have independent suspension, and you steer with a knob at the back. Two NOS bottles and a fire extinguisher add film details.

8. Lego® Technic 42210 2 Fast 2 Furious Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34)

The Skyline is the second Fast and Furious car on the list and has a function no other Technic car had before: according to Lego, it is the first Technic set with a drift function, which raises the car for drift poses. You also get a 6-cylinder engine with moving pistons, steering, front and rear suspension, an adjustable wing and three NOS bottles. At €139.99 it is a good middle option.

9. Lego® Technic 42154 2022 Ford GT

The Ford GT is the only set from our 2023 list that is still on sale. Its 1:12 scale makes it the most compact supercar here. It still has independent suspension on all wheels, front-axle steering, a V6 engine and rear-wheel drive with a differential. At €119.99 it is a good introduction to the adult range. In the US it was listed as sold out, and Brickfact lists it as retiring soon in Europe.

10. Lego® Technic 42223 1966 Ford GT40 MKII

The Ford GT40 MKII from 1966 is the cheapest Technic set with an 18+ label, with an RRP of €74.99. It is much simpler than the other cars here: you steer with a knob on the roof, open the doors and the hood and look at the V8 under the engine cover. It is a good choice if you want a classic race car for the shelf without spending €200 or more.

The other F1 cars

Three more F1 cars are worth a look if you prefer their team:

  • Ferrari SF-24 (42207): 1,361 pieces, 2-speed gearbox, V6 engine with spinning MGU-H, adjustable spoiler.
  • Aston Martin Aramco AMR25 (42240): 1,547 pieces, 2-speed gearbox that raises the DRS in high gear, V6 engine and a simulated electric motor.
  • Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance (42171): 1,643 pieces, 6-cylinder engine with moving pistons and a DRS-style opening wing. It costs €219.99, is still on sale in Europe and is listed by Brickfact as retiring soon.

Retired sets for adults

Several of the most popular adult Technic sets are now only available secondhand or from shops with remaining stock. They include the Ferrari Daytona SP3 (42143) with its 8-speed gearbox, the Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 (42115), the Liebherr LR 13000 crawler crane (42146) and the app-controlled Cat D11 bulldozer (42131). Expect to pay market prices for them rather than the original RRP.

Alternatives to Lego Technic for adults

Lego does not cover every subject. There are no current Technic sets of tanks or military ships, for example. Some Lego alternatives have such models in their range, including:

  • Mould King
  • Cobi
  • Nifeliz

You can find military sets that are usually compatible with Lego in our Lego vs. Cobi comparison. Our Mould King vs. Lego comparison and the article on Lego Technic alternatives cover more options.

Lego® Technic for adults: our conclusion

If you want the most complete Technic experience, choose the McLaren P1. If you prefer machines, the Volvo EC500 excavator is the better choice, and the G 500 has the best price per piece of the large sets. For F1 fans, the McLaren MCL39 and the Red Bull RB20 are equally good, while the Ford GT40 MKII is the cheapest way into the adult range.

Lego's adult Technic sets are rarely sold at full price for long, so it pays to compare prices before you buy. In the Brickfact price comparison you can choose from a variety of suppliers and save money. The Brickfact app informs you via push notification as soon as a new Lego deal is available.
